Relaxing in Frankfurt

This Christmas we took a trip interrailing around Europe – our 4th city on the trip was peaceful Frankfurt, in the West of Germany.

After over a week of crazy sightseeing and ‘always on’ wandering around cities, we pitched up in a nice hotel, and decided to spend our 2 planned nights here relaxing as much as possible.

The hotel

We chose the beautiful Maritim Hotel close to the city’s Messe Hall – it’s location was ideal for walking to and from public transport and getting to nearby restaurants and shops was a breeze.

Best of all, the hotel had a gorgeous swimming pool with killer views of the city.

The food

We ate very well in Frankfurt. Our first stop was actually an American themed sports bar – we just fancied spoiling ourselves with a good burger!

Champions is situated in the Marriott hotel across the road from Messe Hall. Although it’s based inside a hotel, prices were very reasonable. I opted for the pulled pork burger, which had the ideal amount of meat to sauce ratio. The skin on fries were salted to perfection. Keegan went for the footlong steak sandwich, which he also loved – and we washed our meals down with a couple of pints of German beer.

The décor felt very Americanised, the wood panelling and burgundy tables and walls adorned with sports memorabilia made me think we were not in Frankfurt but actually back in NYC! Very authentic. Now it wasn’t quite traditional German food, but we loved it, and I’d definitely recommend if you want a good feed whilst visiting Frankfurt.

The sights

Unfortunately the weather was not on our side in Frankfurt. On the first night we got our only big snowfall of the trip, and on our only full day, we had rain so torrential it made Manchester seem dry!

We loved the mix of old and new architecture in Frankfurt, it was a stunning city. We can’t wait to go back when the weather is sunny!
